It is not a sport coat, which is less formal and usually in a tweed or some other pattern. Historically, blazers were used for sailing and tailored closer to the body, while sport coats were used for hunting and were cut more loosely.
"There's a lot of emphasis on gender fluidity in fashion right now," Cadmus said, "but despite the fusion of women's and men's clothing, every woman I know still likes to see a man in structured, traditionally masculine garments like blazers. Experimentation with fashion is great, but stock your closet with the basics. To quote the Dalai Lama, 'Know the rules well so you can break them effectively.'"
Incredibly versatile, a navy blazer is one of the core garments a man should own if he lives in a large city, near the water, or has a lifestyle where the wearing of suits and sports jackets needs to be bridged. A blazer should always be matched with odd trousers (never a fabric too similar) and is not a substitute for a suit; rather, it is meant to fill the void between a business suit and casual dress. Technically, blazers are more formal than light colored or rough weave sport jackets and about on par with a suit worn without a tie and loafers. A blazer is at home dressed up with a tie and dark slacks and is a natural dressed down with an open collar striped dress shirt, white trousers, and boat shoes.
The most noticeable detail on a blazer jacket, blazer buttons can range from delicate smoked mother of pearl buttons to heavy solid gold family heirlooms passed from father to son. Most manufacturers will make their jackets with simple generic brass buttons; although many never change these, a man in the know can easily turn one jacket into many by simply having a few sets and changing the buttons out with the seasons. Mother of pearl for spring & summer, silver for fall, and gold for winter.
1) the jacket fits you. 2) the style is simple (no 4-button, Saturday Night Fever, or Zoot Suit coats). 3) the fabric is solid navy or dark blue. 4) the plastic buttons are removed and proper blazer buttons are attached.
Some of the best blazers we found are from Amazon, Lulus, and Nordstrom. But, we found some gorgeous plaid button blazers from Amazon (yay for affordable and Prime-eligible!) and some stepped-up splurges from Saks Fifth Avenue and Revolve.
To make your shopping spree easier, purchase one (or more) of the top blazers below. We included color, sizing and fit options with each find, if applicable, to help you score the best blazer to wear for trekking back to the office.
Everything looks better in pink including blazers and this cropped edition is no exception. The lapels and double pocket flaps add a crisp, put-together feel while the vibrant bubblegum pink shade brings a vibrancy and pop of fun to any fit you style it with.
Looking for a more relaxed-fit style? This plum blazer looks dynamite with dark-wash jeans or a pair of our favorite work pants. If you want to go the extra mile, pick up one of our favorite nude heels to match, too.
While most blazers are single-breasted, there are some double-breasted cuts available for 6-button blazers if you want something exceptional. Expect notched lapels and an overall feeling of exclusive luxury if you go for the full complement.
To remain as versatile as possible, blazers are usually made from hard-wearing cotton or worsted wool. Hopsack, serge, flannel, linen, and even cashmere can be used too, so you can easily find a range of looks and luxuries. Remember that a subtle shine (not a polyester gleam) usually imparts the idea of class to an outfit, so use that to your advantage. A soft sheen for more formal and elegant events, and a looser weave and lighter fabric for daywear.
Remember that blazers are, basically, the middle ground between sport coats and suit jackets. This means that making them as versatile as possible is in your best interests, especially when starting your blazer collection. You can never go wrong with a crisp, classic, navy. It will pair well with semi-formal pants for events like daytime weddings. It also transitions just as easily into a casual look over jeans.
The fit does matter but blazers are a little bit more relaxed than formal suits. They typically have structured shoulders, so make sure these fit well, and consider a little tailoring through the rest of the jacket, too.
A suit jacket is usually made from superior fabrics to sport coats and blazers. Not because the others are inferior items in any way, but rather because the suit jacket, as part of a full suit, is designed for a different kind of wear. High-quality worsted wool is the most common suit jacket fabric, but you get luxury versions like mohair and even silk. Twill, gabardine, and corduroy are more unusual options.
Sport coats and blazers open up a whole new world in the male wardrobe, giving you a wide staging post between scruffy and formal. You no longer need to either wear a suit or go casual. You can work a business casual office like a pro, and look smart and put-together no matter where you roam. If you want to establish yourself as a powerful presence and a confident, elegant gentleman who owns a room and turns heads wherever he goes, you need a wardrobe to match.
In general, a traditional blazer is a great choice for business environments, formal functions (like weddings), and night events. If a suit could still be worn without looking too out of place, a blazer is the best bet. Sport coats will take you through day-to-day life, casual events, and day events. Wear a blazer to a dinner date and a sport coat to a coffee date.
Perfect for draping over your shoulders at the office, adding that polished finishing touch to your workwear, blazers are the fashion chameleon to beat all others. They go with everything from jeans and white t-shirts to mini skirts and tracksuit bottoms. Yep: if you're still finding it tricky to end your two-and-a-bit-year-long love affair with loungewear, you'll be pleased to know blazers even pair well with your favourite pair of cuffed joggers, for an elevated take on our most comfortable sartorial style.
In summer, make a beeline for lightweight blazers over the heavier blazers you might favour when it's colder. Think: linen blazers courtesy of & Other Stories or something sleeveless like 4th & Reckless' Margot design. That way, you remain cool in the toasty climes, but still look put-together.
The moral of the story: however you're planning to wear it, investing in one of the best blazers is never a bad idea. Trust. And fortunately, our favourite fashion brands stock every style under the sun, so you can find the one that works best for you. Be it oversized blazers, checked, tailored, longline, loose or double-breasted.
Our favourite blazer looks to don right now? We can't get enough of the sunshine-inducing hue of Karen Millen's Soft Twill Sleeveless Tux Jacket. It's also available in a chocolate brown shade, perfect for autumn, and makes the ultimate case for dopamine dressing. Frankie Shop's Gelso oversized silhouette is also a top contender for us, as its powdery pink hue complements every summer palette you could think of.
The TrailBlazer was originally released as a trim package on the 1999 Blazer, which would explain why the name is so similar. It was spun off into its own unique model in 2002 and was produced through the 2009 model year. The Blazer nameplate was revived for the 2019 model year, now a midsize crossover with unibody construction rather than a body-on-frame full-size SUV. The Trailblazer name was revived in 2021 as a subcompact crossover, a far cry from the large, off-road capable TrailBlazer of yore and still a completely separate model from the similarly-named Blazer.
Size information: *This new version of Katharine does not have stretch to it. The Katharine blazer is double-breasted but slim, however it is not designed to be fitted. If you are in between sizes or want a more oversized fit, we recommend sizing up. (We love the look of a blazer with a little extra room) Our size chart below provides garment measurements taken when the garment is laying flat and buttoned. We have found using these garment measurements and comparing to measurements of a similar jacket or blazer you may have in your closet (this does not have to be exact) has made sizing more accurate.
This blazer fitted really well and its very comfortable. Took her on a trip recently and it was very easy to dress it up / down. The color and texture is really beautiful and soft, and it's slightly longer on the body, so its very flattering.
LOVE the fit of this blazer. Just perfect on the shoulders, arms are long enoug, and I'm short so it covers my bum. So easy to style dressy or casual. My favorite part is how soft it is. Very glad I to add Katherine as my 4th piece.
A fitted blazer is a true classic. Consider picking one up in your favorite neutral: black, navy, or tan. Below I am wearing the Nordstrom 1901 Stretch Cotton Twill Blazer, which is currently sold out. The J.Crew Parker Blazer has a similar fit, but the tan is more of dark caramel.
Fitted blazers are available in one, two, or three-button styles. When finding the right fit, make sure the top button closes easily. If there is more than one button, it is not necessary, they all close. The seams on the shoulders of your blazer should end where your actual shoulders do. There may be a small bit of padding in the shoulders. Make sure it does not extend beyond your natural shoulder line.
The length of a fitted blazer is a personal preference and often depends on your body type. I prefer a fitted blazer to skim my hip but not cover my bum. I generally size up in all blazers because I have broad shoulders and I hate feeling constricted in any garment.
One of the most popular blazer styles is the boyfriend fit or oversized blazer. My favorite one is from Everlane. I have it in black (see below), glen plaid, and recently purchased beige twill. You can check out how I style my favorite blazer in the post A Quick & Easy Outfit Formula. This blazer has a roomy, menswear-inspired shape and a modern vibe. I am wearing my true size 8 as this blazer is already oversized. It is made with 100% recycled wool giving it a good amount of warmth and a nice drape. 781b155fdc
